1. Paul Newman (1925-2008)At long last, the Hottest Man That Ever Lived, according to three rounds of voting. After twenty-nine days of counting down, I have to confess that I think you guys chose wisely. (I also have to confess that I’m a little braindead, so apologies if this write-up doesn’t actually make any sense.)Newman, who actually pulled ahead of Chris Meloni by a pretty wide margin, first rose to fame in the fifties, playing both of the parts that James Dean had contracted to do before his car crash in 1955.A few years and a few films later he would receive his first Oscar nomination, for playing the alcoholic son of an angry patriarch in Tennessee Williams’ Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. For all of the many flaws of the character Brick Pollitt, Newman is visually and emotionally captivating from start to finish. In the sixties he would star in a number of extremely successful films—Cool Hand Luke, Hud, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid foremost among them. In the seventies, at around the same time he began competitively driving racecars, he began doing different sorts of movies, alternating between big-budget action (The Sting), disaster movies (The Towering Inferno), and more cerebral stuff like Quintet. While not every film was a success, he worked with some of the best directors around, from Hitchcock (in Torn Curtain) to Robert Altman (in both Buffalo Bill and the Indians and Quintet). And he always looked very, very hot.Though he’s known as much now for his charitable efforts as for his acting or the immense sex appeal that lasted well into his older years, Paul Newman is as fine a choice for Hottest Man Ever as I think anyone could make.
